PINHOLE CAMERA IMAGE (MONTSALVAT, 1984)
IN THE MID 1980s I SHOT A SERIES OF IMAGES USING A PINHOLE CAMERA AND 8X10" SHEET FILM AT THIS MELBOURNE ARTISTS' COLONY.
THE EXPOSURES WERE AROUND 30 - 90 MINUTES AS THE PINHOLE WAS THE EQUIVALENT OF AN APERTURE OF f720. THE SLIGHTLY LESS THAN SHARP PINHOLE QUALITY REFERENCED THE BUILDINGS' CONSTRUCTION AND THEIR INCLUSION OF LESS-THAN-PERFECTLY FITTING RECYCLED ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS.
I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED VARIOUS LOCATIONS USING ALTERNATIVE TECHNIQUES BUT RARELY WITH THE SUCCESS OF THIS COMBINATION.
GOLD BLING, (MARTIN GEORGE, 2015)
THE LINKS OF THIS SCULPTURE CONTRAST BEAUTIFULLY AGAINST THE COMMANDING LINES OF THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS.
THE CHAIN IS GOLD IN COLOUR BUT I THINK THE SMOOTH GREY TONES AND METALLIC HIGHLIGHTS CONVEY AN UNCOMPROMISING WEIGHT WHICH IS LIGHTENED BY ITS TRUE COLOUR.
SO, HERE IT IS AS A MONOTONE.
This is my 29th year of working professionally as a photographer.
I have operated my own studio for 19 of those years and still love what I do, every day. Admittedly the coffee machine helps me through some of them.
Most of these years have been spent photographing people in retail, industrial and lifestyle settings, and others have been spent photographing residential and commercial buildings - inside and out.
I really enjoy a challenge and always use whatever method necessary to produce a result which more than satisfies both the brief and my client.
